Carpet beetles are tiny, rounded beetles, often speckled black, white and brown. The adults feed on pollen and are harmless, but their small, hairy larvae feed on natural fibres such as wool, silk, fur, feathers and leather. The larvae like dark, undisturbed areas, so damage is usually found under furniture, along skirting boards and in cupboards that are rarely opened. Before the visit, vacuum the whole home, including under furniture and along skirting boards, and empty the vacuum outside. Take clothes and linen out of affected cupboards and wash or dry clean woollen items. Clear the floors so the crew can reach every area. Keep people and pets off treated carpets until they are dry.
